Shugart (ed.), Applied Computational Genomics, Translational Bioinformatics 1, DOI 10.1007/978-94-007-5558-1_2, © Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2012 Abstract The major aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of the fi eld of genetic epidemiology and its relevance to the identi fi cation of the causes and risk factors for human diseases. The most important goal of the methods of genetic epidemiology is to elucidate the joint contribution of genes and environmental exposures to the etiology of complex diseases. The key study designs used to achieve this goal including family, twin, adoption, and migration studies are summarized. The fi eld of genetic epidemiology is expected to have increasing importance with advances in molecular genetics.

Basic molecular genetics for epidemiologists.
Ageneral increase in the number of epidemiological research articles that apply basic science methods in their studies, resulting in what is known as both molecular and genetic epidemiology, is evident. Actually, genetics has come into the epidemiological scene with plenty of new sophisticated concepts and methodological issues. This fact led the editors of the journal to offer you a glossary o...
متن کاملTerminology, concepts, and models in genetic epidemiology.
Genetic epidemiology brings together approaches and techniques developed in mathematical genetics and statistics, medical genetics, quantitative genetics, and epidemiology. In the 1980s, the focus was on the mapping and identification of genes where defects had large effects at the individual level. More recently, statistical and experimental advances have made possible to identify and characte...

This is the second of a series of three glossaries on genetic concepts used in epidemiological research that the journal is publishing with the objective of helping the reader "walk" around the journal.
متن کاملJumping on the Train of Personalized Medicine: A Primer for Non-Geneticist Clinicians: Part 2. Fundamental Concepts in Genetic Epidemiology
With the decrease in sequencing costs, personalized genome sequencing will eventually become common in medical practice. We therefore write this series of three reviews to help non-geneticist clinicians to jump into the fast-moving field of personalized medicine. In the first article of this series, we reviewed the fundamental concepts in molecular genetics. In this second article, we cover the...
